What goes in your black box

Yes please

  • Steel cans
  • Aluminum cans
  • Plastic containers (types 1, 2 and 3. See description below)
 

No thanks

  • Foil
  • Metal jar lids with plastic seal
  • Glass bottles and jars

Please remove lids from plastic bottles and put into the black wheelie bin (unless clearly marked type 1, 2 or 3)

Please rinse cans and plastic in the washing water when you’ve done the dishes before placing into the black box.

What plastics can be recycled?
Ever wondered what those little triangle and number symbols are that you find at the bottom of plastic containers? They show what type of plastic the container is made from. There are 7 types. Those shown below in green with a tick are those that we can take.

PETE symbol

PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate)
Commonly used for transparent bottles (fizzy drinks), cooking oils and cordials.

 

LDPE symbol LDPE (Low Density Polyethylene)
Usually the material used to make carrier bags and bin liners
HDPE symbol HDPE (High Density Polyethylene)
Normally opaque and used for milk bottles, fruit juice and washing liquids
  PP symbol PP (Polypropylene)
Margarine and meal trays
PVC symbol PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride)
Used for cordials, toiletries and cooking oils.
  PS symbol PS (Polystyrene)
Commonly used for yoghurt pots, foam trays and boxes.
      OTHER symbol Other
Any other plastics that do not fall into the above categories.
